Choosing the right practitioner can feel challenging when it comes to cosmetic aesthetic treatments. Whilst many people rely solely on social media, the abundance of filtered images isn’t always reflective of reality.
Lack of medical credentials
In the UK, anyone can perform cosmetic treatments, even if they’ve attended just a 1-day course! A lack of credentials should be a big no-no. Medically trained professionals, such as doctors and nurses, have invested years in their training, have a deep understanding of human anatomy, and adhere to a strict code of conduct. They are regulated by professional bodies (GMC and NMC), have continuing professional development training (CPD), and are required to hold malpractice insurance. So, you can be sure you’re in safe hands!
‘Botox’ parties
Did you know, it’s illegal to advertise Botox or any other prescription-only medicine? Be wary if you encounter such promotions, particularly “Botox parties”. These ‘parties’ can lead to distractions and limited or no consultation time, resulting in rushed decisions. Focus on professionalism by choosing a medical practitioner who complies with safety protocols and is held accountable by their professional bodies.
Lack of transparency
If a practitioner is unable to provide a thorough consultation, you will lack the information needed to make an informed choice. Open and honest communication ensures you fully understand the pros/cons of treatments, alternatives, aftercare, and the costs. With any treatment, make sure you sign a consent form, have before/after photographs taken, and have a follow-up review.
Unsuitable premises
Just as you wouldn’t visit someone’s home for a dental appointment, the same standards should apply to aesthetic treatments. Steer clear of those who perform treatments in kitchens, living rooms, garden sheds, etc. These places lack the necessary cleanliness and could raise the risk of infection. Check out a clinic’s reviews and ensure the environment is professional, hygienic, and equipped to provide safe treatments. Even better, choose somewhere that’s registered by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), as their accreditation ensures high standards of care.
Unlicensed products
Before proceeding with any treatment, it’s essential to enquire about the products being used. Have they been extensively researched and tested? What is their longevity, and who are the manufacturers? Are you able to see the box? A reliable practitioner should discuss their product choice and be able to provide manufacturer brochures. For use in the UK, products must be CE-marked and preferably FDA-approved for greater reassurance.
Pushy sales tactics
Be cautious of those who promote unrealistic goals, such as ‘Kylie Jenner’ packages or ‘snatched’ faces. These can be used to push unsuitable treatments, leading to undesirable results. If it looks too cheap or too good to be true, it probably is - buy cheap, buy twice! Ensure the treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs. Remember, we are all unique and your well-being should be the priority.
