The popularity of cosmetic treatments like Botox continues to soar—but so do the risks when procedures are carried out by untrained individuals using unlicensed products. Alarming new figures from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have revealed a surge in hospital admissions linked to botulinum toxin procedures gone wrong.

Between June and August 2025 alone, 41 people in England were diagnosed with botulism, a potentially life-threatening illness. Symptoms can range from slurred speech and difficulty swallowing to breathing issues that require intensive care. These cases are believed to be connected to unlicensed and illegally administered botulinum toxin injections.

The Rise of Dangerous, Unregulated Treatments

The MHRA has launched multiple criminal investigations targeting individuals and businesses selling unlicensed botulinum toxin products – many of which were being administered in non-clinical settings such as hair salons, private homes, and even hotel rooms.

These illegal products, often sourced from abroad and marketed under names like Botulax, reNTox, Innotox, and Toxpia, are not authorised for use in the UK. Since May 2023, over 4,700 vials of these unlicensed substances have been seized. It’s important to remember that botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine – in the UK, it can only be administered by qualified healthcare professionals operating under strict regulatory guidelines. At reputable clinics like ours, every injectable treatment is:
– Performed by either Dr. Anthony O’Neill or Nurse Jenny O’Neill

Sourced from approved, regulated suppliers
– Administered in our CQC-registered clinic

Unfortunately, not every provider meets these standards. The MHRA has warned that those found guilty of selling or using unlicensed botulinum toxin could face a prison sentence and unlimited fines. In response to these growing concerns, the UK government has proposed tighter regulations. Under new measures, only registered healthcare professionals working from Care Quality Commission (CQC)-approved premises will be allowed to carry out high-risk aesthetic treatments.
